In May 1851, gold nuggets were found on the mountain, creeks, and small rivers near Sydney,
Australia. The local residents began to look for gold. Those living in other cities in Australia, moved
to these areas for gold hunting. Very soon more locations were discovered with gold also. But they did
not have enough labor to help in their mining activity. They tried to import labor from other countries.
At that time, a lot of people in China were looking for job. Through the arrangement of middlemen,
groups of young people from China were shipped to Australia to work in their gold mines. At that time,
there was a popular colloquial term “sold as piglets” for this type of immigrating abroad. The gold rush
lasted till 1914.

Tai Ting Cheun was Tai Ying Fu’s father, also Tai Lung Hing’s grand father. He was born in about 1847
as the only child of the family. His mother passed away in his early childhood and his father took care
of him alone. His father made his living by collecting herbal plants from the nearby mountain and sold
them for money to keep the family going. The last business trip he made, he said goodbye to Ting
Cheun and went up to the mountain for his usual herbs collection. He never returned and no one had
ever seen him thereafter. It was speculated that he might have been eaten by fierce animals like tiger.
Poor Ting Cheun lived alone by himself but with help from distant uncles in the village. He was still
young in age and could not take good care of himself including his hair. In those days, men wore long
hair and braided into a long queue. There were lice nested in his hairs. As a result, his hairs were cut
and head shaved. He hid himself in his home all day and dared not to go out fearing that the other
children friends might laughed at him for having no braided queue. When he was 16 years old, he
decided to “sold as piglets” to Australia to work in gold mines. He had been gone for over 30 years
without any words received from him by the village elders. They thought he might have accident and
passed away in Australia. They were considering to sell the field and other  property under his name
and shared among the relatives.
